Hot Chocolate 15k Recap

There really is no better motivator than chocolate.

My expectations for the Hot Chocolate 15k were not very high because my husband’s company party was the night before (and hello finger foods and open bar!) I’m not a big drinker but because my husband had been out of town for so long (an eternal month!), I wanted to enjoy the night with him and eat, drink, and be merry–not worry about what I ate because of a race the next day.

So I indulged and had two cocktails and paid several lengthy visits to the other bar, the cheese bar šŸ˜€

We still made it home early because, well, we’re not much of the party type. Seeing 9 o’clock before my head hit the pillow made me at least feel like I’d get a decent night sleep.

I woke up, er, my son woke us up at our usual 5 a.m. time and I began getting ready. I wasn’t sure whether to go with shorts or leggings as the weather in Arizona is still pretty mild (don’t hate me). I decided capris because I’m a wimp to even the smallest drop in temperature.

I had a ton of friends doing this race so I made sure to get there early with enough time to take pictures and chat. There were 3 running groups that I was meeting up with–2 before the race and 1 after–and two co-workers who were also running. Trying to find everyone proved to be an awesome warm up šŸ™‚

Teachers on the run!

The race had corrals which I liked and was happy that I was in the first one with several friends from my running group. We all run similar paces so when the gun went off, we all stayed together at the beginning.

We were chatting and not really even paying much attention to our pace which was great considering I hadn’t wanted to anyway.

The first mile beeped a 9:00 flat and I was pleasantly surprised as I felt great and had been talking the entire time. We kept running, keeping up our conversation, giggling, and just having fun. The second mile beeped 9:06 and again, we were happy to have maintained our pace talking the way we were. The third mile beeped, 9:07. Now I was starting to get a little competitive with myself and figured if I had been keeping such a steady pace, I might as well try and keep it that way the rest of the way. One of my friends began distancing herself and sped up her pace, another friend began to slow down a bit. I kept it steady.

Yes, please congratulate me for those beautiful splits! šŸ˜€ I was feeling so good and felt like I was on total cruise control.

Part of the credit does go to my husband though– he had not signed up to run the Hot Chocolate 15k because he thought he’d still be out of town. Since he’d made it, and needed to get some mileage in anyway, he decided to run part of the course with me šŸ™‚

Mile 8 was part of an awful long out and back and I beeped it away at 9:09.

The last mile was all about finishing strong and getting to the chocolate as quick as I could.

I was so incredibly thrilled! I wished this would’ve been a half marathon because the way I felt would have earned me a new 1/2 PR lol! I was so happy with my splits and felt that this was by far one of the best races I’ve ran this year. Such a good way to start to close out the season (I do still have one more race, a 1/2, on Sunday!).

Having such little expectation and going into it with purely fun in mind I think allowed me run such a good race. I want to remember all of this for future races! All stressing out does is make me overthink things and lose focus on why I do this in the first place–to have fun!! šŸ™‚

After the race was more socializing. Seriously, this race just had good vibes all around.

If you’ve never done a “fun” race, this would be the one to do. It’s still a race you can be competitive at if that’s your style (the top finisher ran it in 49 minutes!), but it’s also one that’s all about having a good time.

Having done it two years in a row, it’s become a yearly race that I will for sure always have on my calendar šŸ™‚

2013 Year in Review

Itā€™s crazy to think that the year is a day away from being over. I feel like since having kids, time goes by at a different pace than before. People would tell me when I was pregnant with my first, my daughter, to cherish the moments because before Iā€™ll know it, time will fly by. Back then, I thought it was just hogwash and would just smile and nod. But whoa! Itā€™s true!

There are so many things Iā€™m thankful for in 2013. So many things that I can reflect on and call special moments. But, Iā€™m going to slim it down to 13 highlights. In no particular order, well, in chronological orderā€¦ : )

January: I had signed up for the P.F Changā€™s Rock n Roll Ā½ marathon months before and found out I was pregnant the second time two months before this race. I went back and forth on whether or not I should still run it. I decided, literally the night before, that Iā€™d do it and walk/jog the 13.1 miles. Here I am with my husband and my son 13 weeks in my tummy : )

2. April: My daughter turned ONE this month. I just canā€™t believer that my little girl is growing up so soon and right before my eyes. She is my little energizer bunny that constantly keeps me on my toes. I
love her.

3. May: This was my last month of work. It was a super hard decision to leave my job and become a stay-at-home-mom. There are times that I still wonder if I did the right thing. I love being with my kids and sharing special moments with them, but I also miss my other kids. I miss reading literature and teaching writing and listening to my studentsā€™ stories. I miss my co-workers and the knowledge they shared with me. There is a possibility of me returning this fall; I have yet to decide on what Iā€™ll do.

4. July: Helping to start and being a part a Healthy Moms group has been such a rewarding experience. Every day I post a Daily Check-in with a pump up song where moms check in with their workouts. I love reading what the women are doing and seeing their accomplishments. So many have said that the group has inspired them to change their lives and being even a small part of that gives me chills. I may never meet any of them, but knowing Iā€™m remotely a part of their change makes me so happy.

5. July: Oh my goodness, my son was born this month. Throughout my entire pregnancy, I called my son a chill dude and thatā€™s exactly what he is. He is such a good baby. Heā€™s happy wherever heā€™s at and whatever heā€™s doing. Heā€™s just cool.

Seeing him and holding him, I knew our family was complete. We have our beautiful daughter and now our son, we couldnā€™t be more blessed.

6. September: Having been pregnant for what seemed like two straight years (my kids are 16 months apart), I was extremely antsy to get back on the workout field. At 3 weeks post-partum, I began going to hot yoga and at 6 weeks post baby, I ran my first 5k! It was a slow one, but it felt oh so good!

7. October: Iā€™ve mentioned in previous posts that Iā€™m pretty obsessed with my husband. I won the lottery with this guy. Our anniversary is in this month and every year we try and do something fun and memorable. Last year, we ran the Bisbee 1000 and this year we took an amazing mini vacation to San Francisco. Any time I think of this trip, I smile. This trip was absolute perfection. Seriously, I could not name or think of one negative thing. It was just perfect.

8. November: Anytime I can run a race with my husband, I get all mushy and excited. Weā€™ve been running our hometownā€™s Turkey Trot 5K 3 years now and this year we were super excited as I was finally NOT pregnant! Lol! We had goals in our minds as far as how we wanted to do and I was beyond excited at my final time of 25:40. I had been shooting for anything under 27 and boy did I deliver : )

9. December: This was a busy month for me running wise. I ran the Hot Chocolate 15K early December and was just blown away. I honestly think back at this race and canā€™t believer that I actually did so well. My goal had been to finish in under 1:30 and my final time was 1:25 with a 9:11min/mile pace. !!!!

10. I had a 5K race not too long after and I had a lofty goal of finishing under 25 minutes (I still canā€™t believe Iā€™m even saying that!) I finished at 25:05 and was sooo close. But Iā€™m so freaking excited that Iā€™m even in that range and that I had gotten 2nd in my age group šŸ˜€

11. Christmas this year was so special because it was our first Christmas in our own home. We chose not to travel this year and Iā€™m so glad we didnā€™t. It was truly something special waking up and seeing my daughterā€™s eyes light up seeing the gifts under the treeā€”how did those get there!?!

12. I had a goal to run 5 races, one for each month of my sonā€™s age at the end of the year : ), and I was able to complete that with 3 5Ks, 1 10K, and 1 15K.

Of course another goal was to lose as much baby weight as I could and with the year closing, I am very happy to announce Iā€™m 7 pounds away from pre PRE pregnancy weight!

13. Finally, a highlight of my year has been ā€œmeetingā€ so many people through this blog and other social mediums related to my blog. I was so nervous about starting this but Iā€™m so glad I did. I truly am thankful to my sole sister Salt, as she gave me the push I needed to get started and is a patient helping hand whenever I need it.

Hot Chocolate 15K Re-Cap

First off, weā€™re in need of another YAAAY!!!!

I knew it was going to be a cold one (I have to add the ā€œfor Arizonaā€ disclaimer) and it certainly was. I expected it and went prepared with the works: long running pants, long sleeved shirt, running jacket, those ear cover thingys, and gloves. Youā€™d think I was running in Antarctica but I didnā€™t careā€”I hate being cold.

I had a feeling Iā€™d start stripping during the race and I did; the gloves came off at mile 3 and the jacket at mile 4.

After my watch beeped away the first mile, I saw I had done a good warm up at 9:27. I decided then and there that I was going to shoot for sub 9:30 the entire way. Andā€¦..I did it!!

As I was running and seeing that I actually was completing each mile under 9:30 I couldnā€™t help but think of how far Iā€™ve come. I felt like I was seeing all of the hard work from the past couple of months right in front of me. Sometimes itā€™s hard to think that it will pay off but it does, it truly does. I had been a 10 minute miler for such a long time you couldnā€™t convince me that Iā€™d be running a race with sub 9:30 miles.

When I crossed the finish line and saw that I had finished at 1hr 25 min tears welled up in my eyes I was so ecstatic. My goal had been to finish under 1:30 and to have done it with time to spare made me so happy. You couldnā€™t erase the smile from my face crossing that finish line. It never went away all day.

To top it off, well, you know what else was waiting for me at the finish lineā€¦..chocolate!!! After I collected myself as best I could, I walked over to redeem my mug of hot and melted chocolate. Iā€™m a bit particular when it comes to chocolate but I definitely give this raceā€™s two thumbs up! Perfect Sunday!
