Weeks 12-15: #itsgoingdownatphx

Welp, looks like I’ve gotten a little behind on these recaps, lol!! To catch you up, training has been going really well. Which of course, makes me nervous.

I’ve had some pretty amazing workouts at paces I never thought I could do. So far, I’ve completed an 18 miler, a 20 miler, and an 18 miler, with my last 20 coming up this weekend. The last two long runs were super tough leaving me wondering if I can really do this thing, but let me tell you something, besides running these past few weeks, I’ve been working on my mental game LIKE WHOA.

I’ll do a full recap on the reading I’ve done (and podcasts I’ve listened to <—finally catching up with the times!) after the race, but I do want to say that immersing myself with positivity has been such a help for me this training cycle.

I wouldn’t be able to have hit these paces without believing I could.

Of course I get nervous, will I have had a great training cycle but an abysmal race? But as soon as those thoughts start creeping in, I shut them out.

And if for whatever reason, things go to shit and I don’t BQ, I’m guaranteed a fun time because… my friends are getting married at mile 26!!!!

follow the fun at @rundrunklove

Love them!

the bride-to-be and meeee!

Yessss!!! How awesome is that? So I “met” Scott through his (now defunct) blog and then met him in real life when we both ran Chicago Marathon 2015. That’s when I met Marsha, the girl he’ll be marrying. We hit it off and now we’re the best of friends ❤ They came out last year for Phoenix Marathon when Marsha was trying to BQ (she did) and then came out again to baptize my son.

I ❤ this pic.

Hoping to ring that bad boy again this year!

Regardless of the outcome of the race, I’m so glad these two will be there. I know that they’ll be my tequila drinking buddies if I need to drown my sorrows or celebrate the good times 😀

CAN’T WAIT!!!

–Have you seen a mid-marathon wedding?

Week 7: #itsgoingdownatphx

Last week was pretty cray cray–with what was a full week of training and a half marathon PR tacked on at the end!

Monday, December 4–3 miles easy

Just an easy run around the hood. This was supposed to be a tempo run but my heart wasn’t in it for some reason, and I decided to move it to the following day. Which ended up being a great idea.

Tuesday, December 5–6 miles

I met up with my local run club at 4:40 a.m and nailed this workout. Two miles WU, two miles @7:30, 7:25, two miles CD. The two miles were continuous w/o a RI so I was really happy I was able to keep the pace and even negative split (it was a little fast actually, target pace was 7:40).

Wednesday, December 6–Strength train, stretch, roll

The not so fun stuff, lol!

Thursday, December 7th–7.50 miles

This was a doozy. I was NOT looking forward to this run because it just seemed…hard, lol!! But I met up with some buddies (again at 4:40 a.m.) and my pacer friend Tomio agreed once more to take on this workout on with me.

2 mile WU
2x5min @7:10-15 w/RI (7:05, 7:11)
3x3min @7:00 w/RI (7:04, 7:18, 7:34)
5x1min @6:30-50 w/RI (6:33, 6:43, 6:30, 6:26, 6:25)
1 mile CD

I struggled a bit with the 3 minuters, but I was pretty euphoric after this run. It was hard but I did it!

Friday, December 8th–Stretch, roll

I stuck to stretching and rolling and gave myself a rest day from strength, lol!

Saturday, December 9th–4 miles

Easy 4 miles with my MRTT crew.

Sunday, December 10th–13.1 miles (Scottsdale Half Marathon)

Elle made a good point (she’s so smart) on my race recap, in that I didn’t have an actual taper leading up to the half marathon and despite that, I was able to PR. I hadn’t thought about that but she was right. I had a full week’s worth of workouts leading up to the race!

I love this pic.

So far, I’m feeling pretty good post race. I’m excited for the progress I’ve made and I’m excited to continue my training. It is such a difference from the last cycle where I was really struggling–on many levels–but one of which was my job, which I no longer have. I’ve decided to retire from teaching and stay home with my kids a little longer. I’m not sure yet what my future career-wise will look like, but I know from past experience that whenever I’m home, I make running my full-time job, lol! I’m thankful for another go at stay-at-home-status and the opportunity to devote some extra time to training. ❤

–Have you benefitted from marathon training and PRd on a race during?

–Have you walked away from something you once loved? (I taught for 9 years!)

Week 5: #itsgoingdownatphx

How is it the last week of November?!? Friday is DECEMBER you guys!!!!!

Okay but to recap last week, it was Thanksgiving week here in the states so things were a little different….

Monday, 11/20–6 miles

My coach has now transitioned me into Tempo/Active Threshold runs on Mondays. I was actually excited about this run.

7:40 target pace #nailedit

Tuesday, 11/21–2 miles

I met up with an Instagram friend for an easy two miler. I “met” @steffafee at last year’s #werunsocial Christmas ornament exchange 😀 She just so happens to have family here in Arizona and we of course had to meet up while she visited them for the holiday.

AZ sunset ftw!! (she said it was too hot here, lol!)

Wednesday, 11/22–4 miles

Typically, this would be a speed day but because my coach had given us the option to do a Turkey Trot as a substitute, I met up with a BTB teammate for some miles.

Thursday, 11/23–3.1 miles (Turkey Trot 5k)

You guys, this race was a disorganized mess. I love my small little hometown, but they did not bring their A game that morning. First, their “website” had no official start time. It said 7:30 a.m so for this runner girl, I took that as the start of the race. Sounds legit, right? The race did not actually start until 9!!!! I had done my mile warm up at 7:00 thinking okay, it’s gonna start soon. NOPE. And when you asked around, no one really knew.

Then, they separated people from “competitive” to “walkers” and maaaaybe there were 30 competitive runners?? Maybe…. I figured since only competitive runners qualified for awards, they’d get to it pretty quickly after the race (remember, I’d been there since about 6:30!!!)

I came in 3rd female overall (yay!) and knew the two girls in front of me were not in my age group–so 1st in my age group. My husband and I decided to wait around for awards (I knew McDonald’s gift cards were at stake.)

WELL, they waited until the very. last. walker. crossed the finish line. I mean, I get cheering in all runners/walkers, but I did not expect to wait ANOTHER HOUR after I finished for the awards to begin!!!

First female overall was a high school cross country runner and second place overall was a cute girl in her twenties. When they announced the 20-29 AG award, they did not announce the cute blonde!!!! We looked at each other like, whaaat?! Immediately after, they announced the 30-39 AG award, and they did not announce me!!!!

Already long story short, they completely messed up when runners crossed (and when they registered runners) so me and the second place OA girl walked outta there with no award. FIVE HOURS AFTER I ARRIVED. Mind you, I finished the race in 22:12!!! Twenty two minutes!!!

The run was a for a good cause so I kept reminding myself about that. I wasn’t upset about not getting my McDonald’s gift card, medal, and award– I was upset about all the time wasted that could’ve been spent with family. Last year’s Turkey Trot was supposed to be the last one (which I won! 😀 ) and they switched organizers for this year–these new peeps need to get this event back to how it used to be if they want to keep it going.

Still smiling 🙂

Friday, 11/24–Rest, Foam Roll, Stretch

This pic is from the Gilbert Half last week. I love how me and the random dude have the same expression and form, LOL! I beat him by the way 😉

Saturday, 11/25–15 miles

I woke up at crazy o’clock to meet my run club at 5 a.m. for a cold, early start. I felt uh-mazing during this run!!! I was pleasantly surprised considering the 5k I’d done and traveling.

My watch died juuuuust before the 15 mile mark and I was so relieved to see that the workout had been salvaged. I was a teensy worried, LOL!!! I mean, it’s gotta be on Strava/Garmin for it to count, right? :p

Sunday, 11/26–4 miles

Some easy recovery miles with my Moms Run This Town girls ❤

Total Weekly Mileage: 35.25 miles
