Five Favorites

It’s Friday and I’ve been digging the DC Trifecta’s topics so I’m linking up with them again for this week’s Five Favorites. Thank you Mar, Cynthia, and Courtney for hosting! Screen Shot 2014-06-06 at 9.17.23 AM My 5 Favorites 🙂 Favorite thing about my job I’m a high school English teacher and while it’s tough something to work with squirrely, hormonal teenagers, they can actually be really fun sometimes. During out poetry unit, I get to read the likes of Frost, Wordsworth, and Shakespeare. I mean, it doesn’t get any better than that! Except it does! I have a my students create a sonnet, after reading Shakespeare’s “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?”, on the topic of love. Their sonnet is on something they love. One of my students decided to devote 14 lines to Taco Bell. Yes, you read that right. And it was actually pretty good! Shall I tell you of the great Taco Bell? So my favorite thing about my job is seeing students create. Most of them hate poetry, but then they start writing and see that they’re actually pretty good. And that it’s fun! It’s the best. Favorite thing about where I live OMG, I love it here.

Favorite thing about being married I’ve gushed enough about my husband but I don’t care. I have an absolute blast with him and my favorite thing about being married is the constant companionship. I don’t mind being alone, but I’d so much rather be with my husband ❤ Me and my speedy <3 Favorite thing about being a mom Gahh!!! There’s so many things but it’s seeing my kids grow right before my eyes. Seeing that light bulb go off. Seeing them explore, absorb, learn. My daughter has been in a colors phase and recently drew her first rainbow IMG_20150207_194132 I couldn’t believe its beauty. She told me what each color was and then said, “My rainbow!!” and then, “For you mommy!” MELT. My son has recently discovered a love of reading and is constantly asking me to “Book! Book!” (which means read, of course 🙂 ) I love it. 2015021795085409 Favorite thing about running YOU No, seriously. When I first started writing and keeping this blog, I wasn’t sure how long I’d last. But then I started “meeting” people and it’s really become a place for me to “hang out” with my friends. You all have been through a lot with me and have comforted me at my lows and celebrated with me in my highs. I’ve always loved running but it’s the running community that really makes this sport special. What are some of your favorite things? About your job? Where you live? Running? Family?

Friday Five: Fave Race Memories

Hooking up again today with the DC Trifecta girls Mar on the Run, You Signed Up For What!?, and Eat Pray Run DC for this week’s topic of “Favorite Races”.

Screen Shot 2014-06-06 at 9.17.23 AM

This is a tough one.

But, if I had to narrow things down, here are my top 5 so far:

1. Bisbee 1000

My husband and I did the Bisbee 1000 Ultimate Stairclimb race a couple of Octobers ago. Bisbee is 25 minutes away from where we grew up and we actually had never heard of the race til a few months prior! Once we did, we knew we had to do it. It was actually my husbands first race ever!! What a way to start–with a 1000 stairs to climb lol! The steps weren’t consecutive, but they totaled 1000 once all was said and done. The course ended up being a little over 4 miles and it was definitely a challenge but sooo much fun.

2. Rock n Roll Arizona 2014

This was my first big race post baby #2 and I had the ambitious goal of getting a 1/2 marathon sub 2 hour finish.

And I did it!!!

I trained so hard for this race and knew that I was putting maybe too much pressure on myself considering I had given birth to my second child 6 months prior. But I really wanted to challenge myself and I really wanted to work towards something. My husband also ran this race and the feeling I had when I finished and fell into his arms is something I’ll never forget. 1:58:11!!!

3. Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon–Madrid, Spain

It’s Spain, need I say more? 🙂 This was another fun race my husband and I did. Actually, I’m noticing a trend. All my faves so far I’ve run with my husband 🙂

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 10.25.47 PM It was a hilly couse and definitley different in a lot of ways compared to American races but I was extremely pleased with my 2:08 finish.

4. Grand Canyon Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim

Doing R2R2R is something I will NEVER forget. By far the most challenging and most exciting thing I’ve ever done.

Over 45 miles in two days. 100+ degree temps. Insane elevation changes.

It was simply amazing.

5. Phoenix Marathon

My first. You’ll never forget your first.

Again, I was ambitous attempting this 7 months after having my son, but I wanted to do it. I didn’t have any “real” goals. I had a time I was shooting for but wouldn’t be devastated not getting (I didn’t get it)–I just wanted to cross that finish line.

And I did in 4:44:12 🙂

My husband didn’t officially run the race but he might as well have as he carried my the last 6.2 miles. When I hit the wall, I thought I was done and I was frustrated I couldn’t keep going. He kept pushing me though and ran/walked with me those last miles. And I’ll never forget his words when we saw the “final mile” sign: “This is the last mile of the first marathon of your life. Finish strong.” I ran that entire last mile.

Crossing that finish line=best feeling ever

Yep, I'm a finisher!

–What would say is your favorite race or race memory?

Have a great weekend amigos!!

Travelin’ Pants/Blogs

My two buddies Salt and Julia from Here’s What’s Cooking tagged me on a fun blogger’s award. I like questionnaires probably as much as I like trivia games–which is A LOT. I think I just like questions 🙂

I’ve never seen the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants nor read the book, but several of my students have so I have a pretty good idea of what it’s about. In any case, I’m honored to be a part of this “sisterhood” of pretty awesome bloggers. Thanks Salt and Julia!!

The Rules:

1. Post the logo on your blog.
2. Thank the person who nominated you.
3. Answer the questions.
4. Choose 10 or so other ladies who blog as your nominees.
5. Post the links to the nominees’ blogs and notify them on their blog.

Questions:

1. What is your favorite color?

Easy Peazy. PURPLE. For as long as I can remember, this has always been my favorite color. One big contributor? My mom. This is her favorite color too so I think since birth I’ve been hearing and seeing it’s awesomeness.

It’s also one of two colors of the Phoenix Suns. I’m a big basketball nut so it’s perfectly fitting that my home team has purple as one of its colors 🙂

2. Favorite Animal?

This one is tougher. I’m not a pet person so I don’t have a great affinity for dogs or cats or fish. If I had to choose, which I do, I would choose….a cow! My daughter loves cow and loves saying “moooooo”. Her all-time favorite book is this one in Spanish–

Facebook or Twitter?

Well I just joined Twitter for my blog page and am still trying to figure things out. I’d pick Facebook because while I personally don’t divulge too much, I actually like seeing what other people are up to. I’m constantly being shocked and entertained at how much and what people share. I also like it because of various groups I’m in. I’m still getting the hang of navigating and up-keeping my blog page on there but so far it’s been fun.

Favorite Pattern?

I’m a solids kinda gal and prefer no patterns. If you were to peak into my closet, you’d see tons and tons of plain colored tops of different fabrics and lengths. I’ve got a gazillion solid purple tops, a gazillion solid black tops, a million solid brown tops–it’s a rarity that I’ll spice things up and get a printed top. If I had to choose my favorite solid? It was love at first sight ❤

What is your passion?

There’s a few things I’m passionate about. First, is my family. I’m so crazy about my husband and my kids. I absolutely love spending time with them. Becoming a mom has been one of, if not, the most life changing experience for me and it’s exciting to have something new and something forever to be passionate about.

Second, I’m passionate about learning. I’m a teacher but not only do I love teaching, I love learning. I love learning from my students, from literature I read, from what’s happening in the world, from friends, from people I’ve never met in person, from my husband, from my kids. I love that I’m constantly learning; I love that knowledge is limitless.

——————–

Okay, so I have to choose a few people. I’m new to the blogosphere and don’t many bloggers but I’ll choose a couple I’ve been enjoying recently.
